City Girls' JT Opens Up About How Prison 'Changed' Her

The City Girls were just about to blow up when JT turned herself into police in June 2018 to serve a nearly two-year sentence on credit card fraud charges. Yung Miami carried the group on her back while JT served her time, and once she finally returned home in October 2019, it was right back to work for the Florida duo.

However, some fans may not fully understand the impact that time behind bars had on JT. During a recent visit to Spotify’s Abolition X podcast, the 29-year-old opened up to hosts Vic Mensa, Indigo Mateo and Richie Reseda about how prison changed her.

“Prison, it gave me the sense of, like, edge that I got, but it did put a lot of fear in me, too,” JT admitted. “It put a lot of anxiety in me. It changed me… completely. I used to be so outspoken, I didn’t give a fuck what I said.

“And then when I got out, it went from being free to say what you wanna say, to if you say the wrong thing you on The Shade Room. [If you] say the wrong thing, they paint you as this person, so it’s like I have to bottle up who I am to the world, because they can’t handle who I am.”

Despite the toll that prison took on her, JT did manage to find a few bright spots while on the inside. According to the City Girl, she was able to form close friendships while behind bars.

“I found a sense of sisterhood in prison,” she added. “I met so many girls who made me feel welcome, who made me feel at home. I made great friends in prison, to the point that some days I didn’t feel like I was in prison.”
