West End, Brisbane: 17-year-old Tyler Whitton dies after construction site fall
A teenage boy was still in his first year of his building apprenticeship when he died after falling several metres at a Brisbane construction site.
Tyler Whitton, 17, suffered significant head injuries after he fell more than two metres at a work site on Victoria St in West End on Tuesday.
Emergency services were called to the scene just after 1.30pm where Tyler was found in a critical condition.
He was taken to the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital where he was placed in an induced coma.
His grandfather, Jack Whitton, made an emotional tribute to his grandson this week after the family “let him go” in hospital.
Tyler was surrounded by friends and family when his life support was turned off on Wednesday, according to 7News.
“It is with a heavy heart and heart felt sadness, that today I say goodbye to my beloved beautiful grandson Tyler,” Jack Whitton posted to Facebook.
“Words cannot describe the pain and complete numbness we are all experiencing, feeling knowing that we needed to let him go.
“Even in my grief as Tyler’s grandfather, I cannot even being in to image the extreme pain that my son Luke and his partner Letitia and Tyler’s mother Jess are going through.”
Mr Whitton said Tyler had been undertaking his first year as an apprentice builder.
“Such an enormous tragedy for someone so young,” he said.

The CFMEU has reportedly visited the site of the incident.
“(We) clearly identified risk of falls from height at a number of locations on the top deck of the site”, state secretary Michael Ravbar told 7 News.
Workplace Health and Safety Queensland is investigating the tragedy.
